IONA study calls for people with asthma to participate in research!

01 Jun 2023

Researchers on the IONA study are currently inviting individuals with mild/moderate asthma to come forward to participate in their study.

The IONA study, which launched in 2022, aims to assess the impact of non-tailpipe emissions from traffic on the asthmatic airway. Electric and hybrid vehicles produce less air pollution from exhausts, but due to their increased weight, they also increase air pollution from brake and tyre dust, and road wear. To date no research has explored the health impacts of non-exhaust air pollution on human health in a real-world setting. As sales of electric and hybrid vehicles continue to rise, we want to understand how this shift in transportation may affect those with asthma.

Participants must:

  • have a diagnosis of mild/moderate asthma;
  • be able to cycle gently for 6 x 15-mins in a single session;
  • live in London;
  • not smoke or vape; and
  • be available on weekdays between 10am-2pm

There is a £200 reimbursement to cover costs and travel.

If you fit the brief and would like to participate, please contact James Scales to register.

The study is being led by Dr James Scales and Professor Chris Griffiths in the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Queen Mary University of London. Further details below:
