Design for all – A place to call home

03 Oct 2023
We are delighted to invite colleagues, partners and supporters of NIHR ARC North Thames to the launch of the Social and Affordable Housing Initiative chaired by Baroness Helena Kennedy KC, on Wednesday 4 October 2023.

With one of the least affordable housing markets in the world and the highest rate of homelessness in Europe, urgent action is required to address the UK’s spiralling housing crisis. In this context, we have established the Social and Affordable Housing Initiative, as a coalition of partners, co-led by architects John McAslan + Partners, UCL and the Dolphin Living Charity, to establish impactful strategies to address the issues relating to Britain’s housing crisis.

This initiative will launch on Wednesday 4 October, with the publication of our evidence evidence-based report and a presentation from the coalition’s panel of experts where their plans will be shared and discussed. Addressing the housing crisis improves the lives of everyone, with benefits accruing fastest for the most vulnerable.

We demonstrate this in our report which summarises the evidence on the health and wider social impacts, the economic costs and savings, and highlights exemplars of social and affordable housing which could be scaled nationally.

With some of the finest architects, engineers, public health specialists, house builders, educationalists and creative power, Britain’s community of makers and thinkers need to be mobilised now to put social and affordable housing at the top of their societal agendas.

Due to industrial action across rail services, this event will be offered hybrid, with in-person attendance at the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), and online attendance possible via Zoom Webinar.
