Understanding disability – a secondary data lens perspective

PROJECT STATUS: Ongoing
/
START DATE AND DURATION: November 22
Summary

Disability is a complex term, varying with context, purpose and data. Definitions are imperfect, and despite the efforts to ‘harmonise’ disability questions across UK surveys, data collection on disability remains inconsistent. Disability survey questions are often difficult to identify while searching for them consumes time, requires research experience, and frequently inaccessibly excludes the disabled people and their advocacy groups. In this research we will:

  • Review a large online UK survey/data engine to identify what disability or disability-related questions are included in surveys.
  • Collaborate with members of the public who have lived experiences of disability to understand: (a) how the identified questions can be used in relevance to them and (b) how best to share the research findings.
